Finding Materials in the Library
Libraries use classification systems to organize the books and other materials on the shelves. A classification system uses letters and/or numbers to arrange the books so that books on the same topic are together. This arrangement results in "seredipitous browsing", you find one book in the catalog, go to the shelf and an even better book is sitting right next to it.
Libraries in the US generally use either the Library of Congree Classification System (LC) or the Dewey Decimal Classification System to organize their books. Most academic libraries use LC and most public libraries and K-12 libraries use the Dewey.
Accessing Online Databases and Resources
For full-text articles, choose Online Resources and Databases from the Library Main Page. The MJI Learning Resource Center offers access to a large collection of online databases with full-text articles, abstracts and citations in scholarly journals, magazines, newspapers and electronic books. You will have to enter your Michigan State ID number or your Michigan drivers license to access these databases.
Getting Books from other Libraries
We will be working to make the Interlibrary Loan System available to the MJI community. This is a resource-sharing agreement between libraries. This will allow access to materials that we don't have from another library.
